The main attraction of the Lost Maples park are the Bigtooth Maple trees. The area is called "Lost Maples" because it is the only area in this part of the nation where the conditions are right for the colorful maple trees to flourish. Maple trees are generally associated with New England, but somehow, there is one isolated spot in Texas (with topography and climate vastly different than New England) that is home to many maple trees. I wonder how the first maple trees got started in the area. It may never be determined with certainty. It may be just one of the many strange quirks of nature. Hope you enjoy the remainder of the photos in this gallery, and plan to visit Lost Maples some time. The optimum time is late October, or early November, but the park is a treasure of rugged natural beauty any time of the year.
